In a gaming landscape dominated by first-person-shooters, there's one cult favourite that's only mentioned in hopeful anticipation: TimeSplitters, with TimeSplitters 2 being the standout of the series.

The time-travelling trilogy is best remembered by fans for its off-beat style and, most of all, for its selection of brilliantly weird arcade modes which made for the perfect gameplay session with a sibling or friend..

Alongside the multiplayer, TimeSplitters 2 likewise had an excellent campaign which saw players searching for time crystals whilst completing a variety of objectives across a range of time periods, ranging from 1920s Chicago to a near-future Tokyo. It was a lot of self-aware fun with just the right amount of campiness in there. Each level was like playing through a B-Movie genre flick; there wasn't much to dislike.

Tragically, developers Free Radical would find themselves in financial trouble before they could create the fourth game. For years, the rights to the series were passed between various companies until finally finding their way back into the hands of the original creators in 2019.

Though there's been no official word on the long-awaited sequel, currently, it looks like TimeSplitters is a game people will be talking about in a hopefully-not-too-distant future.
