10 Video Games That Are Based On Novels
4. Bloodborne
Again, this is one that's going to be one of those kind of "the sky is blue" entries, because I feel like pretty much everyone at this point knows about the influence that H.P. Lovecraft's particularly brand of horror had on Bloodborne.
But I still think it's worth mentioning considering the influence that Lovecraft has had on contemporary horror - YouTuber Curio even has a phenomenal video about Control as contemporary Lovecraftian horror, which you'll find below.
Lovecraft truly was a master of horror and suspense. It's common knowledge that "show, don't tell" is basically fiction writing 101, but Lovecraft took this fundamental to an extreme. He had an acute awareness of a fear of the unknown, that if a human being is unable to even comprehend what has been presented before them then that will scare them more than any comprehensible, physical horror.
If you're a fan of horror and haven't already familiarised yourself with Lovecraft, I highly recommend it.
However, it should be mentioned...the guy was super, super racist and a lot of that is pretty clear in a lot of his work. I would recommend approaching his work as being for the atmosphere and not the content.
