10 Video Games That Are Based On Novels
3. I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream
Let me be the first to say: best title for anything ever. Probably not the first, to be honest, but here we are.
I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is a point-and-click adventure game released back in 1995. There's a lot going on here plot-wise, but the cliff notes version is as follows: Russia, China and America made supercomputers, the American one absorbed the others and developed an intense hatred of humanity, killed all of us except for five, all of whom it brought to the centre of the earth in order to torture and humiliate for eternity.
There's so much more but I do not have the time to get into it here.
The game for the most part is pretty spot on in regards to the significant narrative beats of I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream, a short story by Harlan Ellison. The only real difference of note is that the story is...somehow much, much bleaker.
Again, if you're a fan of body horror and sci-fi then both I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream and Ellison's other work is very much worth your time. Just have Adventure Time or something lined up for afterwards.
