10 Video Games That Kill You No Matter What

5. Nier: Automata

Nier Automata
Square Enix

While ending of Route A in Nier: Automata finishes on a rather happy note, with protagonists 2B and 9S defeating the evil Adam and Eve, that's far from the end of the game. The second playthrough runs through the same events of the first route but from the perspective of 9S, continuing past the finale to reveal that 2B is being corrupted by a deadly virus.

In a ridiculously frustrating mission, your controls are hampered by the virus and the time you have left slowly ticks down. You're forced to slog your way to the other end of the open world, barely able to run, never mind fight, in a sequence that lasts far too long. Still, it's as lengthy as it is to communicate the character's struggle, which makes it all the more tragic when your last stand ends with 2B dying anyway.

After spending two playthroughs bonding with the character, and seeing other robots recover from this state before, it's a genuine surprise when the section ends with 2B actually succumbing to the virus, even if it makes all your efforts to save her seem worthless.
