10 Video Games That Made You Say "WTF Were They THINKING?!"
1. Nothing Was Real - Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time
"It was all a dream" is often considered the biggest cop-out in storytelling. Nevertheless, this feeble plot device is used relentlessly in films, tv, and video games. When Super Mario Bros. 2, Link's Awakening, and Final Fantasy X ended with this lame twist, it felt like our choices and hard work was meaningless.
However, try-Ace tried to put a different spin on this concept for Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. After you've pumped 20 hours of your life into this sci-fi adventure, your party learns everything they've experienced took place in a computer simulator. That's right. Your ensemble discover they're living inside a video game.
Although this meta twist is meant to be clever, it infuriated gamers. Not only did this revelation weaken the story, it cheapened everything that happened in the previous two instalments, since all of those events took place in a simulation as well.
Imagine two hours into watching The Return of the King, you learn everything that happened in The Lord of the Rings trilogy occurred in a false reality. THAT'S how ridiculous this moment felt.
Do you know what the weirdest thing is? Your team isn't that bothered by this epiphany! When they are informed they have been part of a simulation as long as memory served them, they just shrug it off, as if they didn't learn the most earth-shattering truth in existence.
Although Till the End of Time is a solid game over all, many would argue this pointless twist ruined the whole franchise.
