Just when you thought survival horror might be getting a little stale, along comes Outlast to inject the genre with a fresh batch of adrenaline. Taking aesthetic inspiration from Spanish horror film REC, Outlast is an extreme terror experience that makes the player feel almost constantly on the brink of insanity or death. There are no weapons in Outlast, and the player has to simply survive in a psychiatric hospital filled with homicidal maniacs. The only tools with which to help you do this are a notebook and a camcorder, which features a night vision mode to see in the dark. The meat of the gameplay comes from hiding in the shadows from the hospital's deadly inhabitants, before inevitably being spotted and forced into a heart-pumping chase sequence.
