Doki Doki Literature Club! doesn't necessarily punish you for saving - instead, it makes your save files feel inconsequential. As your adventure begins, our protagonist is invited by his childhood friend, Sayori to her school book club. Over time, Sayori confides in you how she suffers from depression, giving you a choice on how to comfort her.

Sadly, whatever decision you make is irrelevant, since Sayori hangs herself either way. Naturally, your first instinct will be to open an old save file and try to stop Sayori from taking her life.

However, you'll be surprised to learn your save files have been deleted. When you restart, you'll notice Sayori has disappeared. Stranger still, the other characters don't acknowledge her, as if she never existed. Every time you save after this point, you have to accept nothing in the game is set in stone. Even if you load your "save file," it might not be the save file you remember.

Late in the game, your classmate, Monika, will actually disable your ability to load or save your progress. Only after you manually enters the game's directory and deletes her character will everything reset, allowing you to access the save options.
