10 Video Games That Punished You For Saving

3. Resident Evil

Resident Evil is directly responsible for putting survival horror on the map. But it wasn't just the zombies that spooked us - it was the limited opportunities to save. To maintain your progress, you had to use an Ink Ribbon on one of the typewriters strewn around the mansion. Because there were a finite amount of Ribbons, the player had to be careful how often they saved.

But that wasn't the only issue. In the original Resident Evil, you can play as Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Chris can hold six items in his inventory, while Jill can hold eight. Because you have limited slots to hold weapons, ammo, health supplies, and key items, carrying a ribbon was as inconvenient as not having one!

It might sound counter-intuitive, but it's sensible to keep saving to a minimum. If you haven't used a typewriter in a while, it's sometimes better to plow ahead rather than backtrack. Trust me. Every Resident Evil player has lost count the amount of times they died, while making their way back to a previously visited typewriter room.
