10 Video Games That Put Fans In Denial

9. Shenmue III

Shenmue fans were crying literal tears of joy when Shenmue III was finally confirmed at E3 2015, and though critics raised concerns about the game's crowdfunding model and evidently lower budget than its two predecessors, most simply seemed happy that a third game was being made at all.

Shenmue III exists, and that's good enough, right?

Though the threequel was embraced by much of the core fanbase, there were also those who felt that it was exactly what they feared: a cheap, janky, awkward game which failed to move the series forward.

As much as many felt that its old-school stiff combat and awkward controls were an intentional homage to the first two games, others opined that this was more a result of the game's tight budget preventing Yu Suzuki from actually making a modern Shenmue game.

Shenmue III's hugely underwhelming cliffhanger ending was also criticised, though some fans defended this on the basis that Suzuki stated pre-release that the game was part of a larger saga, and more sequels are planned.

Even so, considering the strong possibility that a fourth game never actually happens, it does feel rather like an over-defensive response to genuine concerns that Suzuki had a chance to wrap up the main plot and arrogantly refused to take it.

If Shenmue IV does indeed get announced, it'll be fascinating to see how its crowdfunding effort fares compared to the third game.
