10 Video Games That Tried To Be The Next Big Thing (And Failed)
3. Cyberpunk 2077
The most recent example on this list, Cyberpunk 2077 might have been one of the most anticipated games of all time. Created by CD Projekt Red, the title aimed to take the RPG genre to new heights with its next-gen open world where the sky was the limit.
But as everybody probably knows by now, the game was released in 2020 in an incomplete slate, filled with numerous game-breaking bugs.
First, this ''revolutionary' open world felt devoid of life. Night City looked good but was hollow, with the police easy to lose after committing crimes. The title was far from the game-changer it was hyped to be, with gunplay feeling standard and an upgrade system like any other.
On the technical side, Cyberpunk 2077 suffered with the eight-generation consoles performing terribly. Due to publisher mandates, the game was released on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but ran poorly due to hardware limitations. It became so bad that Sony had to pull the game from the PlayStation Store, while CD Projekt received lawsuits due to the technical issues of the game.
Cyberpunk 2077's infamy is still felt today. While the game has received updates and a hit anime series has softened the franchise's reception, its initial launch sullied the reputation of CD Projekt Red forever.
