10 Video Games That Want You To Hate Them

5. Ghosts ‘N Goblins (1985)

I’d argue a lot of games of this era didn’t necessarily want you to hate them, it’s just how games were made. You’d rock up at the arcade, do as well as you could, then come back the next day and try to make your quarter or small change currency of choice work a little harder by getting a little further. Ghost ‘N Goblins wants to hurt you, though.

Upon research of this game I found an article about a dude that spent seventeen, yes, seventeen, years trying to finish this game. You can take exactly two hits and when you die you’re sent right back to the start of the level. Then, if you do manage to reach the end of the enemy-riddled, wildly dangerous level, you will probably get the end state that requires you to play it through again on a higher difficulty to reach the final boss.

If you feel like you’ve had an easy upper hand on video games of late, picking this one up should get that sorted out.

There are weapon pickups that won’t help you, traps that run through the whole game, and the difficulty never lets up. Just this year Capcom have released Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Resurrection if you wanna hurt all over again, or play it on the newly added easier difficulty levels and get your revenge.
