10 Video Games Way Weirder Than Advertised
4. Ecco The Dolphin
If you've never played Ecco the Dolphin, you could be understood for assuming that the retro action-adventure game was a relaxing title in which you traversed the ocean as an adorable dolphin.
Kids and their parents certainly thought as much when it was first released back in 1992, because that's exactly how Sega marketed it.
Except, Ecco the Dolphin is really a far more peculiar and even disturbing video game, as the titular animal seeks revenge against an alien species known as the Vortex that seemingly devoured his friends and family.
In a story that's bewilderingly similar to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home of all things, Ecco the Dolphin centers around the war between Atlantis and the Vortex, culminating in a battle between Ecco and the Vortex Queen, which not-so-subtly resembles a Xenomorph from the Alien franchise.
Throw in time travel, ancient beings, a vast underworld civilisation of hidden, prehistoric dangers, and this is far from the cuddly, simple adventure it appeared to be on the (ocean) surface.
