10 Video Games Where You Were Doomed From The Start

5. Metal Gear Solid

At risk of being a bit overly grim, let's address the facts here: our boy Solid Snake has been dying in every game we've ever played as him in. Not just due to the ravages of time, though - because at that point any single character we've controlled has technically been doomed from the start.

No, Snake is continually set up to be dying in every entry of the Metal Gear Solid series that he's in. In the first game, it turns out that the FOXDIE virus in his blood leaves him with an unspecified amount of time left in his life.

In the second, it's suggested that Snake would have died young even without this due to being a clone of Big Boss (although this ultimately turns out to not be true, but leaves Snake doomed via FOXDIE anyways).

And then in three this becomes all the more real, as the fact he has a very short amount of time left due to all this tampering is made very clear to us, with both the viewer and Snake left all too aware of it.

While he ultimately has a happy ending - making his peace with Big Boss and living out the rest of his days with Otacon and Sunny - knowing Snake will still ultimately need to die before the (improved) virus in him mutates is still a bitter pill for a fan to swallow.
