10 Video Games You Bought CONSOLES To Play
1. Grand Theft Auto III (PlayStation 2)
Finally, we come to an absolute juggernaut of a series; Grand Theft Auto has always been a top-seller, but rarely has it been used to move one console over another. In 2001, things were different as Rockstar plugged in Criterion's Renderware game engine to bring a new game world to life.
GTA had been a PC exclusive franchise until the turn of the century, but to the shock of the fanbase, the third entry in the series was launched exclusively for Sony's PlayStation 2 in October 2001. Entering the new and improved Liberty City was something that had never been seen before in the industry.
Grand Theft Auto III represents an enormous shift in gaming; it created the open-world genre as it's known today and fuelled a major push into more mature video games. By only being available on the PS2 at first, a substantial amount of sales were pushed towards that platform.
This quickly paid off for Sony as GTA III became the top-selling game in North America. Other platforms had to wait upwards of eight months for the game to arrive. Be that as it may, the dev team still had to overcome many technical challenges to fit the PS2's memory limit in the process.
