10 Video Games You Can Never Admit You Haven't Played
1. Grand Theft Auto III
Subjectively you've most likely got your favourite GTA out the bunch - and it's probably San Andreas or Vice City depending on whether you prefer 80's rock or 90's rap - but forgoing how well Rockstar would refine their core formula over the years, it was GTA III that completely revolutionised everything about the way action was portrayed in video games, not to mention honing and perfecting the open-world genre right off the bat.
Titanic Uncharted developer Naughty Dog even noted that until GTA III came out, they were working with their heads down on Jak and Daxter, although following playing GTA III it was such a huge deal they completely reworked the Jak series to release Jak II: Renegade; easily the best of all the 'GTA clones' that have arrived over the years.
GTA is just such a cultural behemoth these days it's easily become a household name outside of purely controversial reasons. GTA V in particular remains the fastest-selling entertainment property of all time thanks to exactly that, and laid down everywhere from Batman's Arkham trilogy to the general mission structure of every open-world game since.
The beauty of GTA is always in how you tackle the missions and targets themselves, and thanks to the amazing world size that especially in 2001 blew everyone's hair back considerably, literally every conversation you'll ever have that stems from GTA (and especially III looking back) are some of the most engaging and entertaining around.
