10 Video Games You Loved As A Teen (But Should Never Play Again)
3. Final Fantasy VII
Before you raise those pitchforks, there's absolutely no arguing with Final Fantasy VII's status as a classic RPG masterpiece: it was, for many gamers (this one included), their introduction to JRPGs, and so holds a magical, immovable place in their hearts.
But time has not been kind to FFVII, especially from an aesthetic perspective, given that the game was braced awkwardly between the old-school charm of the first six games and the glossier production of the subsequent entries into the series.
Beyond the rough graphics and dodgy translation, there's the abundance of unskippable summon cutscenes - which more recent releases remedied with a 3x speed boost feature - the depiction of Barret as a walking ethnic stereotype, and that infamous, casually transphobic Don Corneo subplot.
If you're tempted to revisit FFVII now that it's available on the Switch, you might be shocked at just how much of an eyebrow-raising slog the game can be.
Plus, it's often credited with kickstarting the franchise's tendency towards bloated storytelling rife with excessive exposition. For all of its charms, FFVII isn't the easiest game to play nowadays.
It's probably worth waiting to see how Square Enix handles the upcoming remake, because from what we've seen so far, it could actually provide a worthwhile contemporary update.
