As is customary with the series, after completing a long, arduous dungeon the player is 'rewarded' for their efforts by way of a date with the dungeon's boss.
Bosses are as synonymous with The Legend of Zelda as jumping is with Mario; the two simply go hand in hand. So when the player emerges from a dungeon's many puzzles, rooms and battles, the confrontation between plucky hero and towering enemy is often finely tuned and always epic in scale.
In The Wind Waker, bosses are not only enjoyable from the get-go with Dragon Roost Cavern's Gohma encounter, but they stay consistent throughout.
Though some gameplay loops are recycled from previous entries (the Helmaroc King's glaring similarity to the Helmasaur King from A Link to the Past), there is no denying that the diversity of enemy as well as the methods needed to defeat each one is as strong as the series has ever been.
Matching this with the game's wonderful score makes each boss battle feel worthy of the series. Collecting the heart container that drops from each defeated foe bolsters Link's might by granting more health, but also feels like a worthwhile reward for your efforts.
