Even without some of the lofty (unfulfilled) promises that were made for this game, Fable 3 is nevertheless an incredible RPG brimming with charm and personality. Making up a large chunk of this title’s tongue-and-cheek humour are its weird and wonderful side quests, with The Game being a notable stand out.

This quest sees the player tasked by three self-described powerful magi to rescue a princess from an evil baron. It’s a standard premise for the fantasy genre, however this mission proves to be anything but ordinary once the quest is accepted. After taking the magic orb said to transport players into the baron’s realm, the hero shrinks in size and wakes up to find themselves part of the friends’ tabletop game.

Guided by the bickering trio, players must fight their way through hordes of monsters and demon chickens to reach the baron’s castle while the friends make fourth wall-breaking jabs at game design and fantasy tropes. After navigating their way through the miniature world, players will then come face to face with the 2D cutout of the villain, who’s easily defeated with a single hit.

While certainly weird, the real magic of this quest is its irresistible Fable charm.
