10 Worst Things That Nintendo Have Done
4. Stabbing Their Former Partner In The Back
Sony and Nintendo have been rivals ever since the PlayStation debuted. This is deeply ironic, since Nintendo played a major hand in the console's creation.
During the early '90s, Nintendo seemed unstoppable after the SNES outperformed every other system on the market. Willing to push its tech further, Nintendo partnered with Sony to develop a CD add-on for the console.
Nintendo grew uneasy about the terms of the contract, especially surrounding Sony’s control over licensing and profits from CD-based games. Unable to see eye-to-eye, Nintendo thought it best for the two to part ways. It's a shame things didn't work, but there shouldn't have been any ill will between the pair, since it's all a part of business.
However, Nintendo's next move was pretty low. Oblivious they had rubbed Nintendo the wrong way, Sony confidently declared they were teaming up with them at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show. The very next day, Nintendo announced at the same venue they had replaced Sony with Philips.
Of course, Sony had the last laugh. Rather than letting the project go, they continued with their PlayStation system, which went on to sell a hundred million units. If Nintendo didn't humiliate Sony in such a petty way, maybe they wouldn't have been encouraged to one-up their former business partner.
