1. Resident Evil 2
While Resident Evil 1 was seen as the first true survival horror game, Resident Evil 2 perfected it. You came away from the stereotypical "haunted house" setting and into the real world. The characters themselves were somewhat more ordinary and believable. Leon was a rookie cop on the way to his first day with the Raccoon City Police Department, and Claire was just a normal college student who was out to find her brother Chris who had went missing after the events of the first game. The emptiness of Raccoon City itself presented a very bleak outlook with the streets being overrun with zombies and a manner of other nasties. You felt a certain cautiousness too, due to the fact ammo was scarce and you needed to make every shot count, especially on the huge, imposing Mr. X who was sent to annihilate you.
