Mortal Kombat is awesome. A large reason why, is the unabashed love of all things gory.

Injustice is a fantastic fighting game series too, but it lacks that finishing touch, excuse the pun. And the same can be said for Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and more. There's nothing quite like defeating your opponent, then adding that final insult to injury, and eviscerating them in the most disgusting way possible.

The sick minds at Midway, now NetherRealm, have come up with some truly grotesque and hilarious Fatalities over the years, and we're here to celebrate them. Over the course of ten mainline games, Mortal Kombat has seen well over a hundred Fatalities, but we've combed through the list to come away feeling both queasy and confident - pretty much the only way to guarantee we've amassed the very best/worst the series has to offer.

Let's start things off with a true classic.

Of course, Scorpion is one of Mortal Kombat's most popular characters and the poster-boy for the series. A large reason for this is his mysteriousness. Back in the arcade days, fans just made up their own theories as to who these characters were, and why they looked like they did.

Scorpion's yellow outfit was fairly unassuming, but his moveset and Fatality hinted at someone much cooler underneath.

For his most iconic Fatality, Scorpion pulls off his mask to reveal a skull, then proceeds to blow fire over his opponent, burning them alive. By modern Mortal Kombat standards, it's pretty tame, but sometimes the simplest ones are the best. From the skull reveal to the fire breath, the Toasty Fatality made Scorpion an instant gaming icon.
