11 Best Video Game Boss Battles Of 2015

8. Imlerith (The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt)

The main bosses of The Witcher 3 are all members of the eponymous Wild Hunt - a group of spectral knights who appear during the winter and throughout the game are hunting for the regal warrior Ciri. They're are all pretty standard 'tough dudes in heavy armour', but each battle requires a distinct strategy, and the most enjoyable of these is the encounter with the towering Kratos lookalike Imlerith. We don't know much about Imlerith, except that he's a badass with a penchant for the ladies, who surrounds himself with giggling, subservient women flanking his throne (proving that even spectres have sexual needs). But as soon as Geralt turns up and he picks up his mace and shield - to some awesome exaggerated sound effects - he's all business. The battle goes through several stages as you grind down the big man's health, and in his final stage he drops his shield and swings his mace around with spectacular fluidity, constantly teleporting around you to keep you off-balance (hint: don't use auto-lock-on. It'll freak out over his teleporting and ruin the battle for you). It's a mechanically satisfying duel of speed versus brute strength, sandwiched between a great intro and fittingly brutal ending.
