7. Sahelanthropus (Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain)
As already mentioned, The Phantom Pain was the least boss-centric Metal Gear Solid game of all time, but that fact didn't stop it from delivering one of the most spectacular boss fights of the year, against the bipedal mechanised monstrosity, Metal Gear Sahelanthropus. You encounter this thing twice in the game, with the final encounter being as epic a boss send-off for the series as you could've wished for. The roaring, shrieking tank is equipped with the classic array of rockets and stomping abilities, but what really sticks out is its giant flaming sword-whip, which is more akin to a Dark Souls boss weapon than anything you've seen in MGS. As with the Quiet battle, there is no single strategy for winning this fight, and you can call on any number of vehicles, weapons, or even your horse to take on the creature. The combat arena is a huge chunk of Afghan wasteland, with plenty of opportunities for getting to higher ground and covering yourself from its devastating array of attacks. While it's certainly not the toughest final boss battle in the series, its sheer spectacle and number of ways in which you can take it on make this fight highly replayable.
