For many, no Christmas is complete without a marathon of festive movies to get us into the Christmas spirit. It's almost ritualistic. However, movies aren't the only thing that can sprinkle merry charm in our lives: video games can too.

Though there may not be a library of Christmas based games out there as deep as the movies, there are quite a few expansion efforts that imbue us with joyous cheer in the most unconventional of ways, and in the most unexpected of games.

Where the main game story arcs may not revolve around the most wonderful time of the year, there have been many a DLC or levels within that hit the spot like a delicious mince pie. From wintery wonderland levels in snowy plains, to full blown DLC where you have to save Christmas and the world, there are plenty of opportunities to get that controller in your hand and whisk yourself away to festive cheer.

So grab your eggnog, put on your Santa hat, and take a trip through some of the best Christmas DLC and levels that video games have to offer.

11. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

Nintendo

It's retro time as we revisit the last numbered entry in the Donkey Kong Country series from Rare. Released back in 1996, this Super Nintendo game was (and remains) just as good as the games that preceded it.

Now, those with even the vaguest recollections of the game may be thinking right now, "There's no Christmas levels in Donkey Kong Country 3, you scoundrel!" Well, that may be somewhat correct, but there's a secret hidden in the game which can make all your winter wonderland dreams come true. So for those of you who love your festive season mixed with barrel breaking mayhem, all you need to do is use a simple cheat code.

If you simply go to the file select screen and enter the word "Merry", before you know it all of the bonus levels will be blessed with a Christmas theme. That's not all: you can also bop to festive music, and the game's collectable bananas and stars will have transformed into bells and presents. Talk about Christmas cheer, people!
