What is it that makes video game bars seem so inviting?

It could be that after a long day of questing, we still feel the need to put up our virtual feet, chat with our virtual friends, and pound back a virtual cold one. This may have been felt even more deeply in older games, when diversions from the main quest were few and far between.

While distractions abound in modern games, where open worlds are almost an industry standard, many older games offered us a short but sweet respite from our journey in the form of bars, restaurants, and inns.

The following video game bars served as our safe havens back in the day - if only we could visit them in person today!

11. The Blue Casket - Grim Fandango

The Blue Casket seems like an ideal gathering place for poets, beatniks, and revolutionaries, and the fact that all its patrons are dead should only make it more attractive to the literary-minded.

With that in mind, what's up with the clicking sound we hear whenever a poet graces the stage? Are the audience members snapping their fingers or clapping their bony hands together?

If that image is too morbid for you, then you might want to find a more lively watering hole - in every sense of the word. The rest of us will be here arguing about Truth and Beauty, reciting melancholy verse on the open mic, and drinking “coffin shooters” made with dirty hookah water (we hear it's a killer).
