3. The Dogs - Resident Evil

In the eyes of many, the dog from the original Resident Evil is the quintessential video game jump scare, because it's an early example of a game's ability to have you frantically mashing the pause button and retreating into the corner of your room to lie down for a few minutes (or hours).

After walking through one of the mansion's hallways early on, a zombie dog will burst through a window to give chase, and as you run away, another dog will smash through another window to join the fun.

Everyone hates playing this part of the game and with damn good reason. More than two decades later, it's still a benchmark for jumps and arguably the most memorable gaming jump scare ever. Seriously, what other game will have you actively wishing you were fighting the giant spiders in this hallway instead?
