It's fitting that arguably the best jump scare in gaming history takes full advantage of recent technological innovations, specifically the application of VR in horror games.

Resident Evil 7 is an anxiety-inducing experience in VR even during its tamer sections, but there's one jump scare that's so stressful and out-of-nowhere it just might have you pulling the headset off your head and throwing it out the nearest window (curse the PSVR's incredibly long power cable).

Just ahead of the Marguerite boss fight, as you walk towards the crow door, she'll slide into view and start hollering at you before throwing you down a flight of stairs. The sequence is unpleasant enough played "flat", but in VR, it's straight-up traumatic.

Above every other jump scare on this list, there was no shame in screaming your lungs out here. If you played RE7 in VR, you probably wanted a smoke, a drink, a lengthy break and some counseling after this one.
