9. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

You could be playing Gran Turismo. You could be playing PGR, Need For Speed, Ridge Racer or even Burnout, but you'd never get the same level of sheer fun than if you'd been playing Mario Kart. Of course the flash, realistic cars of the lifelike games were always going to draw gamers in, but two-man cartoon karts were the way forward. You will never know true pain until you've been obliterated into the air by a blue shell 100m before the finish line, before all three of your friends zip past you, beeping horns and tossing shells. It's a cartoon game, with cartoon action, but the anguish is very, very real.
