4. Sammy & Ellis Robinson - Mafia III
Though it was known long ahead of Mafia III's release that the game would be about a left-for-dead Lincoln Clay seeking revenge for the death of his surrogate father Sammy and brother Ellis, you can't quite appreciate how wincingly brutal the deaths are until you see the scene play out fully in the actual game itself.
As punishment for refusing to co-operate fully with Don Marcano, Lincoln is shot and left for dead, while Ellis is stabbed to death and Marcano himself shoots Sammy dead.
It's one of 2016's most unpleasant and discomforting death scenes, especially considering Marcano's liberal use of the n-word, and the sheer hateful nature of the kills, which are much more serious-minded in tone than many of the deaths on this list.
