12 Problems Nobody Wants To Admit About GTA
3. Memes And Pop Culture References Will Become Tired & Dated
There’s one
big issue with humour that relies on pop culture references: it doesn’t tend to
age well. Players who have recently jumped into such games (with the
Borderlands series’ Nintendo Switch port for instance) may find these sorts of
things a little tough to swallow.
The Grand Theft Auto series, with its contemporary/very recent past settings, offers snapshots of life as it was then. Pop culture parodies, references, silly meme fodder… it’s part of what makes the series so appealing, but this could just as easily work against the series down the line.
As seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar take their commitment to a game’s setting super seriously (right down to the clunky and authentic fast-travel options in that title).
This aspect certainly holds Grand Theft Auto back to an extent, just as it makes Red Dead a little less player-friendly.
