12 Video Games That Will Change How You See The World
8. The Stanley Parable
Set in a vacant, beige and brown office block, without prompts or agenda, with only the Narrator for company, we naturally submit to his instructions. Obeying him is the only way of progressing at the start so, naturally, we find ourselves doing whatever is asked of us in the hopes of somehow discovering some justification for purchasing this game.
Time and time again we complete simple tasks, from pressing keys to jumping up and down, only to whiz back to our enclosed cubicle. Just as the feeling of déjà vu and entrapment begin to seize us… a door - one that wasn’t open in any of the previous incantations. Through that door, two more. The Narrator tells us to take the one on the left. For the first time, after what seemed like an age of following orders, we are presented with choice.
From here you can choose to either continue to follow or defy the Narrator, the latter leading to ever more eerie endings. Whilst some of what you may experience could be considered a happy ending, it’s never clear what is real, because no matter what you do, you always end up back in your cubicle.
The game forces us to question if we really control our own decisions, or merely think we do? Is our life predetermined and we’re living to a set script, or can we make our own reality?
I don’t know the answer…but I know the Narrator wants you to click on and keep reading.
