4. The End Is Nigh

The End Is Nigh
Edmund McMillen & Tyler Glaiel

The latest game from Super Meat Boy co-creator Edmund McMillen is a ferociously addictive if keyboard-smashingly difficult platformer that will test the patience of even the most hardened players.

Though some might argue that The End is Nigh suffers through its similarity to McMillen's iconic previous game, it is nevertheless on its own terms a terrifically intelligent, tightly-controlled experience, with the feeling of relief that comes from clearing yet another staggeringly difficult screen proving truly elating.

While death is a certainty again and again and again during this game, the instant respawn system does at least soften the blow a little, and the difficulty never really feels unfair.

Also, the use of a ledge-hang mechanic helps differentiate it from Super Meat Boy a little, not to mention the greater emphasis on multiple paths and collectathons. Its brutal level of challenge will put it outside the realm of possibility for some, but for those prepared to take it on, this is a fantastic game.
