14 Incredible Video Game Stories You'll Never Stop Discussing

2. Red Dead Redemption

Exacting revenge isn't a motive done with any more agency than pushing a button following a cutscene most of the time, and although regressively you could boil down Red Dead's final moments to just that too, it's in the gradual tracking down of your father's killer that truly makes it unique to the medium itself. We're going to have to go full spoilers here: Following the slaughter of main protagonist John Marston who you've inevitably grown attached to over the course of the 20 or so hours across the game, you flash-forward a few years to son Jack taking on his father's traits - which leads to an optional mission in the capital city where you can slowly take down one Edgar Ross' family, before also filling him full of led by a riverside. Not only that, but RDR's dialogue throughout is written extremely well, with a bunch of themes being addressed by John and his various companions including independence, work ethics, corruption and race. It's definitely the big finish that gets the most attention, but part of the reason Red Dead remains many peoples' greatest game of all time is because of the whole package.
