14 Most Surprising Metacritic Scores Of 2017

2. Injustice 2 (87)

The original DC-themed Injustice: Gods Among Us scored a solid 81 back in 2013, and when Injustice 2 neared release, it seemed like it would probably score around the same: maybe a point or two different either side.

As it turned out, however, Injustice 2 wasn't just a terrific improvement over the original, it's arguably the best beat 'em up of the generation so far. The cinematic story mode is legitimately involving and shames practically every recent fighting game "campaign" (looking at you, Tekken 7), the combat has become more varied in complex, the graphics are (mostly) fantastic, it's overflowing with content, and even the micro-transaction nonsense isn't overly intrusive.

While other hit beat 'em up franchises are busy serving up piecemeal releases (looking at you, Street Fighter) and coasting on their more sizeable, loyal fanbases, Injustice 2 swings for the fences and largely succeeds. If you've been sleeping on it, the gaming drought of early 2018 is a great time to get involved.
