15 Best Wrestling Games Of All Time
4. WCW/nWo Revenge
WCW's foray into the gaming market was topsy turvy. Titles on NES and SNES had only been so-so, but then WCW vs. nWo: World Tour changed things for the better in 1997/1998. Less than a full year later, AKI Corporation brought their beloved grappling engine back for another whirl with WCW/nWo Revenge. The rest, as they say, is history.
There's a reason this is the most loved World Championship Wrestling game ever. Nitro and Thunder sucked, Mayhem was underrated but undercooked, Backstage Assault was...awful, World Tour was solid and Revenge was lush. It's still fun to play now if you can look back the obviously blocky visuals on N64. There's so much attention to detail that hardcore WCW lovers will appreciate.
The nWo helped WCW become the coolest promotion in the biz, and that comes across in-game. By comparison, main rival WWF WarZone on PS1 still had a wee bit too much family friendly nyuk-nyuk-nyuk mid-90s Vince McMahon on commentary atmosphere to make it an 'Attitude Era' winner. Revenge was dripping with cool compared to that game.
At the time, it was like seeing favourites from Nitro come to life on N64. Then, best of all, the matches played out with a neat momentum-based system that made sense and was simple to get onboard with. WCW/nWo Revenge is a time capsule from the period when Eric Bischoff's company ruled the industry.
They were even dominating the gaming world too, but that'd change once AKI hitched their wagon to the WWF in years to come. No prizes for guessing what's next on the list!
