From coin-operated arcades to microtransactions and blind loot boxes, the gaming industry has always been incredibly money-focussed. In the big-budget climate of today though, it's an increasing rarity to see any new genres or true innovations outside of the indie market, and that's simply down to publishers wanting to 'guarantee' a return on their investment.

To that end, over the years there are a number of franchises that simply don't catch on. Perhaps they were pipped to the post by something with a bigger marketing budget, perhaps their characters just weren't as immediately loveable as those under the spotlight, or perhaps, said publisher who initially invested all that time and effort didn't showcase the game to the masses when it mattered most.

Thankfully, we have the beauty of recommendations, and there's nothing better than letting someone else in on a beloved property you otherwise treasure as 'your own'. That said, feel free to recommend some other overlooked franchises in the comments below, and dig out a handful of the following if you get the time.
