15 Video Game Sequels That Totally Defined Their Franchises

3. Assassin's Creed II

For some the first Assassin's Creed was all style and no substance, as although the trailer showed a variety of actions from the assassinations themselves to tracking down informants and saving citizens from some harassing guards - all these events were separated out across the map, making for pockets of interaction that repetition and the open world itself ended up doing a disservice to. All in all it was a solid start, and that's where AC II came in. Building perfectly on the world itself by switching things up and putting you in Renaissance Italy whilst fleshing out the present day elements of Desmond learning to be an assassin, twinning that with hero Ezio Auditore da Firenze's fight with the Templar oppressors was a masterstroke. Gameplay-wise the series saw an uptick in your assassin's abilities with the double-kill now becoming a series staple, and when all storylines converged at the close to bring about a brilliant fourth-wall breaking ending that got everyone talking - it's a series highpoint Ubisoft haven't been able to return to since.
