11. Persona 5

Okay, so I really didn't think Persona 5 was anywhere near deserving of its five star or 10/10 scores.

Yes, art direction and general presentation were exemplary, but as for the meat of gameplay, pacing and general writing of the characters, it fell down. Hard.

Issues range from the fact it takes a good 30 hours to actually get going to the way Morgana (your "helper") constantly berates you, forcing each day to a close when you have other tasks at hand. Characters are very poorly written, especially in relation to Persona 4's immaculate list of legendary humans, and combat - whilst speeding things up with a few auto-target/auto-chain abilities - ends up being the same bout over and over.

Dungeons repeatedly consist of the same layouts, with the real-world elements of the game that used to be so much fun juggling between now being doled out one at a time, just to ensure you don't get "overwhelmed". Then there's the problematic way the character of Ann is portrayed, the complete lack of motivation for the majority of the game and how you can over-level and break the progression just by indulging in side missions for half an hour.

There's plenty more you can read over here as to why P5 was such a letdown, but fundamentally this became the embodiment of style over substance the more I played.
