10. Metal Gear Solid

You must experience: Gaming's first 'Hollywood moment', and one of the best stories ever told. No gamer's collection is even remotely complete without Metal Gear Solid; the first truly cinematically shot game, the one with more memorable characters than a Pixar flick and the one that gave us the endlessly-imitable "Snake voice" - easily the coolest 'thing' to come from the entire medium in quite some time. Okay maybe that's a bit overhyped, but to the generation that grew up with Snake and his Hollywood-aping adventures through Shadow Moses, dispatching a slew of superhero-style adversaries whilst deploying one-liners and memorable philosophically-tinged dialogue well, it was life-defining. Nothing comes close to the highs of Metal Gear at its peak, and although the series would indulge in its crazier moments as the years went on, it's debatably still this original instalment that has the most to offer any newcomer.
