8. The Joker Laid To Rest

With the Joker's poisonous blood pumping through his veins, Batman has to contend with his nemesis' infectious madness as it threatens to overtake his mind.

Can you imagine what it must feel like to host the essence of a homicidal clown who's caused you no end of suffering? Despite the excruciating pain, Batman manages to resist the Joker's influence through sheer force of will, but it's taken quite the toll on the Dark Knight's psyche.

It's only a matter of time until madness wins out, and the latter half of Arkham Knight sees Batman finally losing control - in a toxin-induced trip through Bruce's mind, Joker gleefully massacres Batman's enemies. With the city in flames all around him, the Joker believes he's finally won. But unbeknownst to him, Scarecrow's fear gas has dug it's tendrils deep into his mind.

With his deepest, darkest fears on full display, the Joker is forced to confront his terror of being forgotten as Batman slowly reasserts his control. When the Joker comes face-to-face with the Dark Knight for the final time, he begs Batman not to lock him away.

And why wouldn't he? His clash with the Dark Knight is the only thing that's given his life any semblance of meaning, and he's acted under the belief that Batman completes him for so long that he's absolutely petrified by the truth - he's all alone.

He always has been.
