18 Essential Landmark Titles Every Gamer Must Play

4. GoldenEye

Growing up in the Nintendo 64 era was defined by one game, and it wasn't one that featured a moustachioed plumber. In a move that proves film adaptations can make good video games after all, GoldenEye created the template for 3D first-person shooters that is still used today. It doesn't even matter that it's a great story told well, because the gameplay (particularly in 1997) was superb. Elements such as stealth and sniping are done to such a high degree of quality that even games today are still trying to match its mechanics. The implementation of split-screen multiplayer also stands as one of the fondest nuggets of nostalgia for a whole generation, back in an age where 'Player 2' would be sat right beside you (sneakily watching your screen) rather than being a faceless opponent somewhere on the internet. Notable worthwhile Bond titles aside from this are the likes of The World Is Not Enough, which brought similar mechanics to the PlayStation crowd, and 007: Nightfire, but sadly very few have matched GoldenEye.
