20 Beloved Video Games No One Admits They Hated

19. Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight took the indie world by storm when it released back in 2017. For many, it remains one of, if not the greatest 2D Metroidvania ever made. A beautiful interconnected world to explore, eye-catching art style, razor-sharp combat and precise platforming all make Hollow Knight a formidable proposition for its rivals. The game still enjoys one of the most active indie communities to this day, and its sequel, Silksong, somehow raised the bar even higher when it finally released last year.

For all of its praise and hype though, Hollow Knight isn't the easiest game to get to grips with. That same beautiful interconnected world that everyone gushes over is extremely easy to get lost in, with maps not readily available, and there are no clear and obvious objectives to aim for when starting out. Indeed, the game's opening hours will often feel like you are aimlessly wandering around, and the soulslike mechanics mean death will be a regular occurrence, particularly to begin with. There's no doubt that plenty of players will have bounced off Hollow Knight as quickly as they picked it up.

Now though, you'd be hard pressed to find many who still hate Hollow Knight. Its developer, Team Cherry, is made up of just 3 individuals, and what they managed to achieve still stands as the pinnacle of indie games. Gamers who stuck with it, or who returned to it at a later date, will have no doubt come to appreciate and understand how brilliant it is.
