The Nintendo 64 boasts some of the greatest 3D platformers of all time in its collection. Titles like Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie provided a blueprint that is still largely followed by platformers today, almost 30 years later. Arriving after both of the aforementioned games, many expected Donkey Kong 64 to eclipse them in pretty much every meaningful way. The fact that N64 owners would need an Expansion Pak to actually play it only lent further credence to the game being bigger and better than its competition.

Donkey Kong 64 garnered strong review scores at launch, and seemed like yet another hit for developer Rare. It boasted huge worlds to explore, 5 unique playable characters, and colourful, snappy visuals that pushed the hardware at the time to its limits. However, it certainly wasn't without its issues. 3D platformers at the time were all about collecting items, but it's safe to say Donkey Kong 64 took this to the extreme, with its release seeing the term 'collectathon' entering most gamers' vocabularies almost overnight.

It wasn't just the overwhelming amount of things to collect though. It was that each character had specific items only they could pick up. This meant the level of backtracking required to grab everything was insane, with players having to drag themselves back and forth across the huge areas while only swapping between characters at specific points. For some, it became simply too tedious, and plenty of players hated it during their initial playthrough. These days, though, its remembered much more fondly by fans of classic platformers or the tie-wearing gorilla himself. People can finally look past the collectathon element and see all of the game's charm.
