South of Midnight was an unapologetic throwback to the PS2 era of personality-first action-adventure games, and its boss encounters were no exception - mostly for the better.

Of all the South American legends Hazel does battle with throughout the game, the highlight is Rougarou, an enraged owl-like creature which players engage in a classic, enclosed arena-style battle.

Rougarou hits incredibly hard and can take Hazel down in just a few blows, so players need to keep on their toes to dodge its telegraphed attacks while dealing damage when the opportunity presents itself.

It's hardly mechanically complex by modern gaming standards, but Rougarou is the most challenging and purely exciting boss fight in the game, requiring players to employ all their accrued knowledge to emerge unscathed.

It's also arguably the most emotional boss fight that South of Midnight has to offer, given that it's less about slaying Rougarou than helping its human counterpart, Hazel's friend Laurent, control his ability to transform.
