Nintendo

It's (somehow) been more than eight years since the Nintendo Switch launched, swiftly dashing pre-release skepticism aside and going on to become one of the most successful and downright beloved video game consoles of all time.

The Switch's handheld/docked hybrid model popularised portable gaming for an entire subset of players who'd never considered it before, and it of course didn't hurt that the Switch amassed an enviable library of first-party classics and third-party bangers.

And so, as Nintendo finally sunsets the Switch and the Switch 2 nears release, what better time to pore back over the console's best exclusive titles since launch?

Though you can certainly expect to see plenty of Nintendo's bread-and-butter franchises on this list - like, above all else, Mario and Zelda - the Switch also delivered a few surprise hits that were totally original IP.

No matter what flavour of game you were in the market for, the Switch absolutely had you covered, and these 20 games all contributed heavily to the console's success in one way or another, ensuring it boasted one of the most diverse and eclectic gaming libraries in history...

20. Golf Story

Sidebar Games

Lets kick things off with perhaps the single most surprising masterpiece on the Switch - Golf Story.

This sports-themed RPG came totally out of nowhere from Sidebar Games in 2017, and immediately charmed players with its quirky story, delightful characters, and retro art style, fused with deceptively deep golf gameplay.

Even if you're no fan of golf as a sport, the game does a fantastic job of making it entertaining and accessible, albeit while offering a surprising level of pushback the further through the story you get.

And if that's not enough, there's also a ton of fun side content here to ably lure you off the putting green.

Though more of a modest commercial success than most of the games on this list, Golf Story remains a much-loved cult fave for doing something genuinely creative and adorable with the well-trod sports game formula.

It's just a shame that Sidebar's spiritual sequel, Sports Story, was an abject mess on launch and failed to replicate its predecessor's success.
