20 Best Video Game Storylines Of The Decade (So Far)
11. Spider-Man
On the surface, there’s nothing in Spider-Man that hasn’t been covered before, be it in comics or movies, but Insomniac’s tale is so well written and well presented that it makes its narrative, all about the rise of the Sinister Six, feel fresh.
From the get-go, a lot of the plot twists are pretty predictable, but the developers' take on these characters are so rich and well-drawn, and their relationships so compelling, that the eventual reveals still resonate. Even though you might have guessed a character’s downfall from the beginning, watching it actually play out is a dream, and if anything the expectation only makes it even more tragic.
The plot as a whole spins an amazing superhero tale, and establishes a larger mythology that will no doubt see the series through for multiple games going forward, but it’s the character development on show that’s particularly special. Peter’s faded romance with MJ is brought to life in a surprisingly nuanced way, while the side-stories of Miles and Aunt May are just as compelling as anything in the main narrative.
It all comes together in a devastating climax as well, that’s just as big on emotion as it is web-swinging spectacle.
