1. The Walking Dead: Season 1

The Walking Dead (game)
Telltale Games

The game that really put TellTale back on the map, The Walking Dead Season 1 is still the studio's finest work. The story of Clementine and her new father figure Lee attempting to survive in the early days of a zombie apocalypse at first seems a little bit overdone - hell, even other games on this list boast a similar plot - but TellTale got in on it first, and set the bar high for every release that would follow.

The bond between the two characters was the obvious emotional anchor, but outside of that relationship The Walking Dead was just a bloody good end-of-the-world story. Covering everything from cannibals to bandits to fighting off hoards of the undead, the episodic series was a love letter to the genre, taking zombie scenarios fans had seen before and presenting them in fresh, original ways.

It really did have everything, and was proof that narrative-driven games could succeed in an era obsessed with matching Call of Duty's level of gameplay-driven bombast. The rest of the seasons were pretty good as well (the quality of its final run is yet to be fully judged, at the time of writing), but the story never quite bettered this seminal original effort.
