20 Boss Fights That Actually Get Easier

17. The Dark Presence - Alan Wake (2010)

When his wife mysteriously vanishes at the start of the game, eponymous writer Alan Wake finds himself in a horror story of his own making as the picturesque town of Bright Falls is consumed by a shadowy Dark Presence that lurks within the depths of Cauldron Lake. Armed with a flashlight and revolver, Wake sets out to save his wife from the evil entity.

When Wake comes to possess an artefact capable of destroying the malevolent force, the climactic chapter sees players race back to the lake as they fight their way through an intense enemy gauntlet. Once they arrive, they encounter the Dark Presence as a living tornado.

Players must then make their way across a collapsing bridge to reach the tornado's heart while avoiding the large objects the Dark Presence hurls at them. Although this isn't particularly challenging, the final confrontation becomes even easier when players are tasked with shooting flares into the pulsating black mass. The game is even generous enough to leave a crate with unlimited ammo for players.

With it only taking a handful of shots before the actual boss is killed in a cutscene, this was a disappointing end to an otherwise exceptional outing.
