20 Disappointing Video Games That Didn't Fulfil Their Potential

9. Silent Hill HD Collection

Silent Hill is back, baby! After many years of suffering and waiting, fans are now being treated to a seemingly nonstop buffet of Silent Hill content. I’ll ignore The Short Message and Ascension and say that this all started with the fantastic remake of Silent Hill 2. Since then, we’ve gotten Silent Hill f, and will be getting a remake of the first Silent Hill game, Silent Hill Townfall and a new movie (that I’m wary of but that first one was okay, right?).

But what if you wanted to play the classics? You’ve played the remake of Silent Hill 2, obviously loved it and wanted to go back and play the original and even take a gander at Silent Hill 3. The easiest option would be to pick up the HD Collection on a digital storefront of your choice, but it may not be the best choice.

Konami lost the shipped source codes for Silent Hill 2 and 3, meaning the HD Collection had to use an alpha build of the games. This resulted in the HD Collection launching with a long list of bugs, including game crashes, inconsistency with sound effects, voice acting sync errors and more importantly, a lack of fog, which is arguably one of the more important aspects to Silent Hill that builds the unmistakable atmosphere and sense of dread.

Konami released a patch that fixed a few of these issues, but not all, with many players still noting that the games look and play worse than their PlayStation 2 counterparts. Many players also lamented the complete disregard for Silent Hill 1 and 4 in this collection. Perhaps we could’ve seen something akin to the Master Chief Collection, where games were added as DLC, but no, we had one patch and were left to suffer in a subpar Silent Hill experience.

Hey, I’m Matt. I work full-time at WhatCulture's neighbours, MyVoucherCodes. I first joined MyVoucherCodes as a Deals Expert, scouring the internet, leaving no stone unturned in finding the best discount codes, sales and offers for our customers. Moving into my first home during the worst possible time (during lockdown), I understand the necessity of saving money when the purse strings are tight. Outside of saving money, I’m into video games, movies, books and music. I host and edit a video game podcast called The Retry Hard Podcast, where my friend and I go through news, reviews and video games in general. I love movies and watching how they’re made, and I’ve worked as a set decorator for a few months on His Dark Materials season 3, which gave me a massive insight into how it all comes together. I also put out music as a solo artist named Matt Kiano, where I won the award for Best Male Artist of 2025 for Radio Wigwam and have been nomiated for Best Live Act at the 2026 Radio Wigwam Awards.
