Bioware's Anthem certainly made a strong first impression when it was revealed at E3 2017. The initial trailer showed players flying across a beautiful-looking sci-fi world in suits similar to what you'd see Tony Stark flying round in, blasting enormous enemies in epic, large-scale battles. Throw in co-op gameplay too, and this definitely looked like the next big thing from the studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Hype slowly built throughout all of Anthem's pre-launch reveals, with each subsequent trailer continuing to turn plenty of heads. The idea of freely roaming a gorgeous-looking sci-fi world in an Iron Man suit was enough to more than pique many players' interests. Offering a unique take on the multiplayer shooter genre that was pretty crowded at the time, Anthem was poised to burst on the scene with a suitable bang.

Unfortunately, its actual arrival ended up being more of a whimper. Excellent flying mechanics aside, critics and fans condemned its repetitive mission design, lack of endgame content, and a story that was sorely lacking considering the developer's usual high narrative standards. Bioware themselves admitted the launch was rougher than they expected, with a plethora of technical issues compounding the game's other problems. Anthem's trailer may have reached for the stars, but the full game quickly came crashing down to earth.
